Raised in the Mississippi River delta,
Sam Taggart, MD, has practiced medicine in rural Arkansas for
the last thirty years. He and his
wife currently live in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Jean Louis Stein, a young engineer, comes to the United States in the mid-thirties searching for his brother. Once here he is caught in the middle between two warring worlds.
As World War II approaches, his mother, a newspaper editor in Vienna, is captured and placed in a concentrations camp along the Danube River. Through a network of operatives Jean Louis is coerced into to spying on the people he works with to keep his mother alive. When the war breaks out he is forced to choose between his mother and his new found friends.
The story resonates with today’s headlines; a time of international crisis with a network of foreign-born spies and homegrown extremists whose purpose is to disrupt American society.
